The Bays has always been Murray's home, having grown up in the area and attended Glendowie College, before heading away for that all-important OE to Europe. He continues to be an active member of the Remuera Golf Club and was also a member of Auckland University’s Gallagher Shield-winning rugby team in 1987 and spent a year playing professional rugby with the Italian club Messina.
